RIO DE JANEIRO -- Australian cyclist Melissa Hoskins was released from the hospital hours after a terrifying crash in training Monday, and she still hopes to compete in the team pursuit competition later this week.The team of Hoskins, Ashlee Ankudinoff, Georgia Baker, Amy Cure and Annette Edmondson were at race speed of nearly 60 kph (37 mph) when they clipped wheels at the end of the back straight. Edmondson stayed on her bike as the other riders fell hard behind her on the banked wooden surface.Hoskins was put in a back brace as a precaution and taken to a Rio de Janeiro hospital for an examination. Tests revealed no broken bones and she was released several hours later.I remember the whole thing. I had nowhere to go, straight over the handlebars and landed heavily on my side, she said. For those watching, it would have been spectacular. We certainly werent on a Sunday stroll. We were doing high-speed pace efforts.Ankudinoff, Baker and Cure walked off the track and were treated for bruises and floor burns, and Edmondson tweeted: Everyone is OK! Bruised, battered but OK with a thumbs-up emoticon.The team pursuit competition begins with qualifying Thursday.The women are all in reasonable spirits considering they touched the deck, Australia coach Kevin Tabotta said. I am not going to lie, no one wants to see that happen. While the Heat have lost matchwinner Grace Harris in the off-season, stylish Indian bat Smriti Mandhana can replace her at the top of the list, while West Indian Deandra Dottin can clatter bowlers just as far.Beth Mooneys consistency with the bat earned her a national call-up last summer, and she carried that on with a big century for Queensland in the WNCL. Shes a player they can and must build a batting line up around. With the ball, Holly Ferlings burgeoning seniority in Australian ranks suggests she is ready to take a step up here, while Southern Stars all-rounder Jess Jonassen has the best straight drive in womens cricket. On their day theyre formidable, they just have to ensure that day comes around more often.Hobart Hurricanes The Moneyball side of the WBBL, the Hurricanes have no frills, no mystique and no Southern Stars. Its indicative of domestic crickets power disparity that not a single national representative has chosen to represent Tasmania. But none of that stopped Hobart putting together an even outfit that most often got the job done, topping the table for much of last year and making the semi-finals.This was built on consistent contributions from low-wattage players like Erin Burns, Brooke Hepburn, and Corinne Hall, though the latter provided some brilliance in the field.
