MONTREAL - No one can accuse the Montreal Impact of standing pat during the Major League Soccer off-season.Eight new names were on the roster Friday when the Impact opened training camp at Olympic Stadium looking to erase bitter memories of a last-place overall finish in 2014.Veteran newcomers included English midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker, former Chicago Fire defender Bakary Soumare and Italian midfielder Marco Donadel. The prize signing, Belgian international defender Laurent Ciman, is to arrive Monday. All those new faces that have been brought in kind of erases the memories because they didnt live that terror that we lived last year, said returning striker Jack McInerney. Just playing will help put it behind us.We struggled everywhere last year: injuries, scoring goals, keeping them out of our net. I think the new faces will help us achieve what we want.Montreal took a big step backward last season when, after squeaking into the playoffs in 2013, it made no significant off-season player moves. The Impact finished last with a 6-18-10 record, scoring only 38 goals in 34 games while allowing 58.The only move of note a year ago was firing coach Marco Schallibaum and hiring former Chicago boss Frank Klopas, who returns for a second season.Klopas focused on rebuilding the spine of the team, mainly the central defence and defensive midfield positions.Ciman and six-foot-four Bakary Soumare, acquired in the re-entry draft from Chicago, are likely to be the new central defence. But Montreal also brought in 21-year-old Victor Cabrera on loan from Argentine club River Plate and got 22-year-old Donny Toia in the dispersal draft from the defunct Chivas USA.Donadel, 31, came from Napoli while former West Ham, Aston Villa and Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Reo-Coker, 30, also came from Chivas to give captain Patrice Bernier some competition for the holding midfield position.Gone are goalkeeper Troy Perkins, defenders Matteo Ferrari and Heath Pearce, who often formed the central defence last season, as well as defender Futty Danso and midfielders Issey Nakajima-Farran and Gorka Larrea. The Impact also saw the retirement of star striker Marco Di Vaio, who must be replaced. Klopas has two or three forwards in mind and hopes to land at least one before the season begins in March. For now, 22-year-old McInerney is their only experienced striker. The American said hes ready to do the job if needed. First-round draft pick Romario Williams is also a forward.I can only control whats in my own hands, said McInerney. If someone else comes or not, Im still going to put the work in and try to help the team win games. The Impact fixed its attacking midfield last season with the signing of designated player Ignacio Piatti. But the Argentine is recovering from knee surgery and isnt expected to start full training until the team goes to Mexico for the second phase of camp Feb. 8.While the Impact was dreadful in league play, failing to win a road game, the consolation prize was capturing the Canadian Championship and reaching the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League.Montreal faces Pachuca in Mexico in a quarter-final Feb. 24 and plays the return leg March 3 at Olympic Stadium. We had a plan on how to improve the team and I think we addressed that, said Klopas. We talked about how we could make the spine of the team a lot stronger and I think weve done that. Were not finished, but I feel happy with where we are right now.The team met Thursday so that the newcomers and some new off-field staff could meet the returning players and management.I think everyones enthusiastic, energized, knowing what the 2014 season was like but also with the moves the club has made, said Bernier, a native of Brossard, Que. Everybody has a blank slate to prove that last year was just a mishap, that it was not the real Montreal Impact.Everybody seems to be abuzz because we also have the (CONCACAF) quarter-finals .That will be an intense, emotional game. So far, you can see everybody has a sense of revenge, to prove we are not the people of last year.Returning veterans like Bernier, midfielders Justin Mapp, Felipe Martins, Dilly Duka and Andres Romero and fullback Hassoun Camara will have some experienced help and leadership from additions like Reo-Coker.Its a very quiet dressing room, I noticed, Reo-Coker said. There are some individual personalities but they dont seem to kind of let that out yet.If we can get great team spirit, togetherness, and bond, its amazing what you can achieve in football. Youre in the right city with the right history behind it and with the fan base that has that European mentality and love for football. He sees no reason why the Impact cant be a contender, pointing to D.C. United, which finished near the bottom in 2013 but was first in the Eastern Conference last season. This league changes so much, he said. Its a fantastic challenge.Evan Bush took over from Perkins as the starting goalie midway through last season. The new backup is former Kansas City keeper Eric Kronberg. One striker the Impact targeted was Alberto Gilardino, but the 2006 World Cup champion from Italy has opted to play in Serie A with Fiorentino. CHAUNCEY BILLUPS (Pistons): Yes they got Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings in the off-season and Andre Drummond is a beast (teams are kicking themselves for passing on him - he rebounds and block shots every game - thats two more discernable and significant skills than most guys in his draft class), but dont for a second discount the impact of having a savvy veteran like Billups on your team. Lions.Less than two weeks after firing head coach Mike Benevides, general manager and vice-president of football operations Wally Buono said Tuesday the team is cutting ties with several veteran players, including quarterback Kevin Glenn. Its about winning, said Buono. Its not about anything else. The 35-year-old Glenn was acquired in the off-season as an insurance policy behind No. 1 pivot Travis Lulay, who was still recovering from off-season surgery to his throwing shoulder. But Lulay wasnt healthy enough to play until early September and re-injured the joint in his only start, meaning that Glenn ended up starting all but one game for a Lions team that finished 9-9 before suffering an embarrassing 50-17 playoff loss to the Montreal Alouettes.Glenn — who wont be offered a new contract — threw for nearly 4,000 yards and had 17 touchdown passes, but he was also intercepted 17 times in leading an attack that often stumbled at critical times.Professional sports, you get measured by winning, and when you dont win theres issues and usually theres consequences, said Buono. We have to analyze where were at, where were going and what do we do to make sure this team is a lot more competitive, this team is a lot more exciting and this team wins a lot more football games.Buono also announced the Lions will not be picking up the contract options for defensive back Dante Marsh, defensive end Khalif Mitchell, linebacker Jamall Johnson and punter Ricky Schmitt.Marsh played 11 seasons with the Lions, but the 33-year-old had injury issues in 2014 and said after the Lions playoff loss that he didnt expect to be back while at the same criticizing the teams lack of identity.Mitchell, meanwhile, was brought back into the fold after being traded to the Toronto Argonauts after the 2012 season, however the hulking lineman who dominated with the Lions in his previous stint with the club failed to make much of an impact. In taking his share of the blame Tuesday, Buono said there were things he could have done differently in assembling the team, including the character in the locker-room.When you look at the personnel and you look at the chemistry, maybe the chemistry wasnt what we wanted. When you bring in players theres always a risk that things blow up in your face, he said. Im not going to sit here and say that wasnt the case. Chemistry is a big part of winning and losing. Chemistry is a big part of harmony. Winning always masks your issuues (and) losing always exposes your issues.ddddddddddddIve never been around a winning team where everybody doesnt love each other. Ive never been around a losing team where there isnt a lot of animosity or a lot of infighting or a lot of guys on different pages.Lulay spoke to the media on Tuesday as well and said he expects to be ready for training camp, something he also said last year about this time before sitting out the first nine games of the regular schedule. He also agreed with Buonos assessment that something was off with the Lions in 2014.I think its fair to say we werent the team that wed hoped we would be, said the 31-year-old. Any time youre losing and its not going as planned, thats when those things come to the surface. We werent who we wanted to be and that needs to change.Buono spoke of the Lions getting some new blood on the sidelines when Benevides was axed, and said Tuesday the interview the process was already underway. He added he had yet to seek the permission of either the Calgary Stampeders or Hamilton Tiger-Cats to speak with any potential candidates who were involved in Sundays Grey Cup game. The one thing that Im trying to formulate in my mind is what and who this next head coach is going to bring to this football club, said Buono. The two most important people in your organization are your head coach and your quarterback. Everything goes from there.Buono was asked about Stampeders offensive co-ordinator and assistant head coach Dave Dickenson, who said last week he would be in Calgary next season. That declaration didnt seem to phase Buono.Me being the politician that I am, Im going to ask a number of teams if I can have permission (to talk to coaches), he said. Thats the etiquette of our business today. I will go through the proper channels. There are people on other teams that wed like to talk to.Another name that has been mentioned is that of Hamilton defensive co-ordinator Orlondo Steinauer, but Buono said his search will reach south of the border. Were not limiting to (Canada). Were going south of the 49th parallel too, Buono said before adding: There are certainly qualities you want. One of those qualities will surely be an ability to mend a fractured and fragile locker-room heading into training camp.We have to change the environment and the culture, said Buono. Whether you like it or not, whether Im hurting somebodys feelings or not, weve got to do that.We have to change the culture and we have to change the environment. ' ' '
