With a second-place finish at the womens rugby World Cup, Canada showed it deserved a place among the sports elite teams.Figuring out how to stay there is the next challenge, and it could be a big one.The Canadian womens team received unprecedented exposure during its run to the final of the World Cup, which ended in a tough 21-9 loss to England on Sunday. Canadas games were televised live, and winger Magali Harveys brilliant 100-metre try against France in Canadas semifinal win made highlight reels across the country. But even after such a successful tournament, head coach Francois Ratier said in an interview after the final that its possible the team might be forgotten after what he called its 15 minutes. It remains to be seen how Rugby Canada builds on the historic World Cup performance, the precedent set by the sustained interest in womens soccer after Canadas bronze-medal performance at the London Olympics could serve as a possible model.I think the fact that it was shown on TV is going to make a huge difference, because women around the world and especially in Canada got to see what we were doing on the field and see what it was all about, Harvey said on a conference call Wednesday. So Im hoping that its going to promote the sport and push females around Canada to try that sport or any other sport. But as helpful as the exposure is, there are hurdles. Ratier said fundraising for the team was a considerable obstacle and getting fixtures against quality teams is a challenge for Canada, but not European teams.Ratier said Wednesday one of the key challenges facing Canada over the next three years is developing depth. While Canadas roster has star power — Harvey won the IRB womens rugby player of the year award, while captain Kelly Russell, who Ratier calls Canadas best player, was a finalist — heavyweights like New Zealand, England and France have more overall depth and can overcome injuries and fatigue easier. Its increasing the depth in certain positions, and making sure that when we have an injury we can replace her with a (quality player), Ratier said. Its identifying more talent and developing more players in the key positions. This is the key for the next three years. And those players will likely have to incur a substantial cost to participate in the next World Cup. Ratier estimated that Canadian players spent around $10,000 out of their own pockets to attend the World Cup and the preparation tournaments leading up to it.Ratier said its a big commitment considering we are playing teams that are funded, like New Zealand, England and France. When you see the French who are paid 120 euros a week when they are away, its not big but at least they can survive, he said. For us, some of the girls had to resign from their job to go to this World Cup.Money doesnt appear to be an issue for Harvey, who said she doesnt think about the big contracts athletes of her calibre get in mainstream professional sports.I do it for the love, I do it for the passion, and I do it because I love representing Canada, she said. But representing Canada is not always easy, especially in the three years that follow a World Cup. Ratier after Sundays final that Canada has trouble lining up quality opponents at the same time that France and England are playing in the prestigious Womens Six Nations Championship. There are also some lingering infrastructure issues compared to countries where rugby is considered a top-tier sport for women. Harvey said she was offered little guidance when she first got into rugby in high school, though she added the level of coaching in Canada is improving. It was pretty scary because there were no coaches who knew how to play rugby so they would just put you on the field and tell you to play, she said. Now its getting better. Coaches are more informed and teach you more. Jaromir Jagr Penguins Jersey . Still, he was a winner for the first time in 15 months. Anderson pitched effectively into the seventh inning before a blister ended his night and the Colorado Rockies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-1. "Its good. Your goal when you pitch is to win the ballgame and its been a while," he said. "Its pretty satisfying, especially my first win in the National League. Hopefully Ill get on a roll here." Carlos Gonzalez homered and Josh Rutledge had two hits and drove in four runs for Colorado, which has won consecutive games for just the second time in the last six weeks. The Rockies are 16-40 since May 20 but they cooled off the Pirates, who entered Friday 44-29 since starting the season 10-18. Not every Colorado player left Coors Field in a good mood. Third baseman Nolan Arenado was removed from the game after he failed to run hard to first on a grounder to the mound in the fourth. Pirates starter Charlie Morton bobbled the ball but was able to get Arenado, who jogged at the start before hustling to try and beat the throw. "We talk a lot about playing the game hard, playing the game right and how important that is, especially when youve been getting your (butt) kicked for a while. Its even more important. Its imperative," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "I just felt Nolan didnt meet that standard at that point. Nolans a great kid. Hes a great player. Thats how I saw it." Anderson (1-3) had not won since beating Houston on April 7, 2013, in his last start for Oakland. He spent four months on the disabled list and moved to the As bullpen when he returned. He was winless in three April starts for Colorado before a broken left index finger put him on the shelf for 81 games. Friday was his third start since coming back and he allowed just two hits in 6 1-3 innings before a blister began to develop on his left index finger "I noticed it in the bottom of the sixth and then I started throwing some breaking balls there in the seventh and it kind of caught," Anderson said. "Hopefully got it before thing (turns) major. It didnt break open and they drained it. I dont foresee it being a problem." He left the game with a 1-0 lead after walking Ruussell Martin for the third time.dddddddddddd "My stuff is getting better and better and my velocity is coming back," Anderson said. "... The offence showed up tremendously." Tommy Kahnle came on and got the last two outs of the seventh and the Rockies broke it open in the bottom of the inning off Morton (5-10). Ben Paulsen and Wilin Rosario led off with consecutive doubles and DJ LeMahieu singled. Ernesto Frieri relieved Morton and pinch-hitter Drew Stubbs bounced a grounder over the pulled-in infield for an RBI double. An intentional walk to Charlie Blackmon loaded the bases and Rutledge cleared them with a double to centre. "He pitched a good ballgame through six and the seventh got away from him," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of Morton. "Frieri came in and wasnt able to quite execute the pitches he needed to so they piled up seven on us." One out later Gonzalez hit his 10th homer of the season to make it 8-0. "It was nice to see our offence but it was even better to see the way we pitched tonight," Gonzalez said. "Anderson gives us a big shot to win this game." The Rockies nearly pulled off a triple play in the fifth after Neil Walker led off the inning with Pittsburghs first hit of the game. With runners on first and second, Jordy Mercer hit a sharp grounder to third baseman Charlie Culberson, who stepped on the bag but his throw to second pulled Rutledges foot off the base. Rutledges relay to first got Mercer, and after a 3-minute, 16-second review the call at second was confirmed. NOTES: Walker has reached base in 22 straight games.
