With Los Angeles in the rearview mirror, Atlanta took center stage in this weeks episode of American Ninja Warrior. No women advanced from qualifying, so none competed in last nights show.?So instead of recapping the womens performances, we talked to one of Atlantas rising stars.Erica Cook, 27, whos based in Gainesville, Florida, fell on the Spin Cycle, the fifth obstacle, in Atlanta qualifying last month. At only 5-feet tall, she misjudged the reach and her shorter wingspan didnt provide her with room to compensate, sending her into the water.I just made a rookie mistake, not a physical one, Cook said in a phone interview. I just didnt prep well enough. I should have thought out what I was going to do... It was an impulsive decision that didnt work out in my favor.Cook burst on the scene during the spin-off show Team Ninja Warrior, joining ninja greats (and roommates) Drew Drechsel and James McGrath. Each team competing on TNW was required to have a woman and Cook fell in with them.I submitted for [American Ninja Warrior] Season 7 in Orlando and didnt get selected, but I went down there for course testing. I met them through that, Cook said. When Team Ninja Warrior came around, they remembered me from course testing and they needed a girl. She proved her chops by conquering the Warped Wall that season, and joining the handful of women who have successfully beaten the towering obstacle. The ANW course and general environment, however, are different, which is a big adjustment from TNW.Being new, its not a question of if you can do it, but if you can do it on the first try, Cook said. Ive only been doing this for less than 12 months, so I know that I have to be mindful of not knowing what everything is going to feel like when I touch it. Drew [Drechsel], Jessie [Graff], and James [McGrath] have been doing this for a couple of years, so they can anticipate how things will react, which is something I dont have the experience for yet. When Cook began training for ANW, she was inspired by Kacy Catanzaro, Meagan Martin, Michelle Warnky and Jessie Graff -- all of whom have put more than a couple of cracks in the proverbial glass ceiling of ninja competition. In her rookie year, Cooks competing during one of the most compelling seasons for women since the show began airing.Whats cool about this season is that there are a lot of really impressive women, and its starting to lessen the gender gap, Cook said. Im sure watching now and how its evolving, theres so many more women and kids saying, Look at what these girls are capable of -- why cant we do that too?Cook and the other women of Atlanta may not be done yet. Being one of just eight women to ever make it up the Warped Wall, as well as making it to the fifth obstacle during qualifying, might be enough to grant her a wild card invitation to the national finals in Las Vegas.Heres the breakdown for the rest of the regional.Atlanta city finals specs:Finishers: 4Female finishers: 0Women moving on: 0New or modified obstacles on second half of course: 1 out of 4The course:Were into city finals episodes, where the first six obstacles remain the same as in each of the city qualifiers (except for a couple of tweaks). In city finals, the course builders added four obstacles on the second portion of the course (which well review below), bringing the total number of obstacles to 10.?The first obstacle on the second part of each city finals course will be the Salmon Ladder -- unless theres a huge surprise. Ninjas hang from a bar and must propel themselves upward to jump the bar up a series of rungs. The eighth obstacle is a goodie brought back from last season: the Floating Monkey Bars. Ninjas grab hold of two bars and use momentum to swing, as if on monkey bars at a playground. The trick is they must carry the bars with them, placing them a set of grips in order to move forward. This ninth obstacle is brutal. Its a new one called the Clacker. Ninjas hold on to pegs attached to bars. Using upper body strength and momentum, they push upwards to flip, or clack, them to the other side. They do that all the way down the obstacle until they are able to dismount to the next platform. The Invisible Ladder returns as the 10th obstacle. This will remain the same on each city finals course. Ninjas grab rings suspended from a hole in a platform and pull. When their movement stops, the ring catches their weight so that it looks like they are pulling themselves up a ladder, through the hole at the top of the finishing platform.Looking forward:Next week, were in Indianapolis, where Meagan Martin (and others) await! Martin had a great run in qualifying, but while shes consistently performed well at that level, shes historically struggled on the finals courses. How she performs next week will decide if she punches her own ticket to Vegas.Cheap Jerseys . Diego Costa provided two moments of individual brilliance inside the final quarter-hour to turn a cagey match into three points for Chelsea. The striker hunted down a lost-cause ball in the channel of West Broms final third and cleanly knocked defender Gareth McAuley off the ball before storming towards goal and beating Ben Foster with a rising, rasping left-footed shot inside the upper left corner on 76 minutes. It was Costas league-best 12th goal of the campaign, matching his entire total of last season when Chelsea slumped to 10th while crumbling under the weight of their title defence. This time around, the naturalised Spaniard has played with controlled fire and fury in powering Chelseas longest winning streak since their club-record 11-game run over the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.Hes showing great passion, he likes to play football. Hes showing me great commitment and work-rate with and without the ball to help the team, Conte said post-match. I think he can arrive in January without a yellow card. I hope he can.Costa has 44 goals in 69 league matches for the Blues, including two in four games against Sunderland.I remember the year we were champions with Atletico (Madrid) he was very strong, and three year we were champions with Chelsea he was very strong as well, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said. This season up to now he has scored very important goals. … It was a rough time for all the team last year but from January or February Diego was already scoring a lot of goals, and he has just carried that form on.Chelseas other single-season 10-game winning streak came during the 2005-06 campaign when they successfully defended their first Premier League title. About the only thing that soured Contes mood was when he was asked about a report in which the FA may dock points for his teams role in a brawl at the end of their 3-1 victory at Manchester City on Dec. 3.Are you joking? he responded as he narrowed his piercing blue eyes at the questioner. If youre involvedd in a situation and the fault is not yours, why must you pay? My players tried to keep their calm.dddddddddddd I dont understand this. I repeat, I dont understand this. Were trying to improve in all aspects, also this. For this reason I reply: you must be joking. In every game you fight a lot during the 90 minutes and then when the ref blows his whistle you finish. I dont know what happened in the past but I know whats happening in the present. My players tried to keep the calm.Chelsea have had a history of disciplinary issues before Contes arrival at Stamford Bridge, most notably their ill-tempered match against Tottenham Hotspur last season in which they were fined a record £375,000 for failing to control their players. The win over City was the fifth time the FA had charged them in the past 19 months, but the organisation has not deducted points for on-field player conduct since Manchester United and Arsenal had an all-out brawl at Old Trafford in 1990 that resulted in United being docked one point and the Gunners two.Though Sunderland (3-2-10) have showed improved form of late to narrow the distance to safety, they have yet to find a way off the foot of the table. David Moyes side was unable to build on a win over reigning champions Leicester City, falling 3-0 at Swansea City last Saturday. The match swung on Gylfi Sigurdssons penalty kick early in the second half that opened the scoring. And another goal three minutes later left the Black Cats all out of sorts. Moyes conceded his team failed to deliver the improved style it had shown in the past month, but he is hopeful Sunderland will regroup quickly. Were back on the bottom but weve been there for most of it so its not something new to us, he said. But we arent back at square one, because weve got ourselves back in with a fighting chance and a few weeks ago we didnt have that. So we will brush ourselves down, and get on with whats next, which is a busy week.High-calibre opponents, though, have brushed past Sunderland with relative ease thus far.
